Dive Report — December 7, 2025

Location: Lovers Point, Monterey, CA Team: Four divers, two shore support

Conditions

  • Weather: Sunny with a light breeze; air temperature in the low 60s.

  • Ocean: Swell 2–4 ft combined with a king tide. Entry was made a couple of hours before high tide.

  • Shore:

    • Launch #3: Strong wave wash reaching nearly to the stairs. The stairs at this location continue to gradually degrade, still serviceable but questionable given the wave action and rising tide.

    • Launch #2: Similar wave energy, but with slightly more dry sand and a stable stairway with a handrail.

    • Entry point: Lovers 2.

Training

The team practiced core skills, including:

  • Mask disturbance and recovery

  • Lost second-stage regulator drills

  • Manual BCD inflation

Marine Life Observed

  • Two mola mola

  • One sea lion

  • A full count of the usual invertebrate life

  • Uncountable fields of purple urchins

Equipment Challenges

Do not ignore the need for regular structured (checklist) equipment maintenance and always be prepared for failures that will arrive despite inspections. One diver experienced a failed dive mask, another experienced a failed low pressure hose connection. Both equipment failures were addressed with calm and measured responses; the mask replaced and the hose repaired.

Summary

Great day

Due to the combination of swell, tide, and beach wash, conditions were challenging. For safety, operations were limited to a single diver in the water at a time.
