Opportunity to (re)learn important scuba skills

Oliver Edwards | Published on 6/14/2025

Every had problems deploying your SMB? The darn thing tried to pull you to the surface? Seems line comes off the reel after every giant stride entry? Gotten tangled in your own line?

Well you're in luck - Saturday July 19, 1 PM to 6 PM, Dennis Hocker (Director of Training) will host a training session at his house to look at deployment of Surface Marker Buoys (SMBs) including the pros & cons of different SMBs and reels.

If conditions permit there will be an opportunity to practice SMB skills at our club dive the following weekend.

In addition, as time permits, Dennis will look at:

  • Pre Dive checks
  • Ascent rate to Safety Stop and Safety Stop to Surface
  • Breathing technics for better air consumption
  • Using a Dive Computer and understanding the information it provides
  • Gas Sharing
  • Minimizing DCS risks

After the training session Dennis will fire up a grill so bring food / snacks / whatever along with your favorite beverage.

Members can find Dennis' address in our membership directory here (not printed for privacy).
